Cinema Club
  • forked from here

A thread for ideas for hashing out details for an as yet unnamed cinema club.

So far the idea revolves around regularly planned group screenings of films at the UICA and elsewhere.

    How does it work?

Is there more to it than that?
  • Okay.

Are you suggesting/implying/proposing selecting films that the UICA would play or going along with their film selections?  I'm cool with either and especially supportive of the former.

Maybe something like a book club?  A film is chosen, we all watch it.  Talk about it.  Maybe it's something relevant, something classic, something new, something indie, something taboo?  Maybe that depends on copyright, etc.?

Some sort of outreach would be nice.  That's vague and idealistic, maybe, but instead of us just watching movies we watch/show movies and do something good?  I don't know.
  • I was suggesting something along the lines of going to see a movie - whatever is playing, wherever it's playing - we just decide on whatever it is as a group.

I think we could totally make suggestions for film venues to run particular films we would want to see.

    Thought:
    1. Go see a movie as a group
    2. (have a drink)
    3. stew on it over night
    4. have a healthy discussion about it the next dia via the internet.

  • That sounds pretty great too.
  • That sounds pretty fun!
  • i did not mean to say dia.
  • ¡Buenos day!
  • @buckshot - are you in??!!? YES!

There are two movies opening at UICA this Friday:

    The Mill & The Cross:

    Blackthorn:

I want to see them both, but I think that I am more excited about The Mill & The Cross.
  • I think Sundays or Tuesdays would currently be good días for me to participate in this.  Thoughts?
  • i am so into this!
tuesdays and sundays after 830 are good for me!

    marlee
  • @anothertape RAD!

Sundays and Tuesdays are generally good for me. I will check with @jaime

Oh! I just realized this was happening, but a movie about muslim punks is screening tomorrow night at 7:00pm at GVSU downtown campus' Loosemore Auditorium with a Q&A with the director.

    CONTENTIOUS

  • Ugh, I want to see it but I'm busy.  If you go let me know how it is.

    New Young Ciné Club!
  • ha, i like that.

When Karis and I would go see movies sometimes we (well mostly I) would call it "Young Cineastes of America."
  • @George: Sundays and Tuesdays might work well for me too. I think I'd have to take it week by week, but I guess that's how everyone is...
  • How about Sundays, unless we decide we want to go to a Meanwhile Movie?
  • Most Sundays and Tuesdays work for me too. Are we on for this Sunday at the UICA?
  • How about The Mill and the Cross on Sunday at 7?
  • i'm game!
  • @buckshot, @kevin, @anothertape does the 7pm screening work for y'alls?
  • on Tuesday?
  • Not for me unfortunately, I work til 9:30 pm :/
  • Blackthorn plays at 9:00pm and closes this week - the mill and the cross stays for another
  • 9pm! i am so there!
  • See you there!
  • how often do we see this meeting? weekly? fortnightly?

UICA seems to be pushing things through pretty quickly.
  • Hmm, as needed.  We'll just have to keep an eye on our calendars (I'll be more flexible in three weeks).  I think it might end up fortnightly but weekly could be a possibility.

The only time I might be able to do The Mill & The Cross is Sunday @ 6.  Go without me if you have to.

"People's History of the LGBTQ Community in Grand Rapids" is showing next Thursday the 17th @ 6:30 @ Loosemore Auditorium in the downtown GVSU campus.  People should go to that!

  • This sounds wonderful! I would like to be counted in for the next communal showing- as I don't have a real job or anything I'm often free.

I mean, if it was going to be like a book club, we could always just have a communal showing- if people can make it they go- if they can't then they just make it their 'homework' to see the movie at some point that week- and then there can be a fixed point at which discussion begins as a group in cyber space?

  • @kevin, i think i am going to start a new thread for the Blackthorn discussion

  • As @ehiggins pointed out, it's not always going to work out that everyone gets to watch the movie all at once - so i have installed the Spoilers module. use it liberally!

    Spoiler tags work this:

    [ spoiler ] blah blah blah [ /spoiler ]

just take out the spaces between the words and the brackets, and it should result in something like this:

    Spoiler:
    blah blah blah

  • Spoiler:
    I love spoiler tags!
What was the livejournal equivalent?  I used that allll the time.
  • I'm thinking of seeing Drive at Celebration Woodland at 2:15 tomorrow
  • @kevin, i think i am in for that! @ehiggins really strongly recommended it. I should see it.

    Are you taking the bus?

@jaime, do you want to go?
  • I've been trying to see it for weeks.  I'm driving to Discount Tire and either seeing the movie while I wait or after the tire's fixed.  I could drive people back.
  • I'm game, I've heard it's good but very violent.
Also, I'm going to sneak in some coffee :)
  • I hear it's violent and *not* very drive-y, or at least that's what some MI lady is suing about.  sounds good to me!
  • she wanted more driviness?
  • Drive "bore very little similarity to a chase, or race action film ... having very little driving in the motion picture," states the lawsuit (which also alleges anti-Semitism). Deming wants her money back, and also "an end to misleading trailers"

    and also it's anti-semitic, apparently!

  • that is an amazing lawsuit. Where in Michigan is this lady from?

Oh, and what of the Mill and the Cross?
  • this sounds great... my schedule is some what flexible

sundays are prob the best for me, tuesdays arent ideal, but i could make them work if meanwhile films were in the mix
  • Anyone still seeing Drive? I'll be there at 2:15
  • I am! Steve is too, and possibly @jaime
  • @mikewolf - home screen is set up!
I am ready when ever you are!
  • I'm going to try to see ElBulli at the UICA tomorrow night at 8. People's History of the LGBTQ Community in Grand Rapids is at Loosemoore tomorrow from 6:30-9:30 according to the event page. If it's only like an hour and a half long I don't want to miss the last showing. Anyone care to join for either?
  • I want to go to both, but it's @jaime's birthday! So I will leave that up to her!

BUT, @kevin, do you want to get that DRIVE discussion going?
  • @mikewolf - Butch Cassidy is on neflix!

when is a good time for you?
  • I see that ElBulli has been extended! Lauren and I will probably go to the Saturday afternoon or evening showing. Or I'll go on Sunday.
  • Sunday is Sunday Soup and Found vs. Found and the benefit for @mattsimoto at the pyramid scheme!

    And Saturday is SASS FEST!

    THIS WEEKEND IS TOO MUCH!
  • Yeah man, I know. I'm going to try to do ALL the Sunday things and hoping to check out SASS FEST for a little bit. TOO MANY THINGS. COOL CITIES!
  • @George - nice... like many ill be super busy this weekend with everything goin on. im usually free after 6pm on weekdays, and it varies on the weekends- sundays usually are the best.
